Northern Utah may be best known for winter recreation activities like skiing and tubing, but there is plenty to do outside when snow isn't on the ground too. Many of these outdoor activities also offer easy ways to stay busy while adhering to social distancing guidelines. One of our favorite ways to get out and enjoy everything Salt Lake City and Park City have to offer is hiking, especially while on the cusp of fall. If you've recently relocated to Salt Lake City or are just interested in rediscovering an old favorite, here are three can't-miss fall hikes you must put on your calendar.
Big and Little Cottonwood Canyons
This glacier-carved canyon is home to Brighton and Solitude and offers stunning alpine scenery. Featuring trails flanked by cascading creeks and aspen groves, Big Cottonwood Canyon is perfect for hikers and bikers alike. To take in the fantastic vistas punctuated with the reds, oranges, and green leaves in the canyons below, simply climb any of the various peaks along the trail.
Big Cottonwood Canyon also leads to its counterpart, Little Cottonwood Canyon. While smaller and narrower, this river-carved canyon offers must-see views. Hiking isn't the only way to enjoy the fall foliage, though. Head to nearby Snowbird and hop on the Aerial Tram which will take you to the top of Hidden Peak.
Cascade Springs and Alpine Loop Scenic Trail
If you're looking for a relaxing trail, this is the one for you! The Alpine Loop Scenic Trail features a paved trail approximately a half-mile long, which branches off into three loops. Two of the loops are wheelchair accessible, as well. This trail's location on the east side of Mount Timpanogos makes it a great spot to take in the breathtaking mountain views and changing fall leaves. Cascade Springs is located just off the Alpine Scenic Trail, as well. Surrounded by glacier-carved mountains, the beauty of Cascade Springs' babbling brooks is only enhanced by the gorgeous fall colors.
If you plan to stop at the trailheads or use any of the facilities during your hike, you'll need to purchase a recreation pass. The recreation pass can also be used along the Mirror Lake Scenic Byway, which winds through the western portion of the Uinta Mountains.
Soldier Hollow Loop
Winding through the rolling hills of west Heber, the Soldier Hollow Loop is perfect for hikers of all skill levels. The trails follow and cut between the ski tracks, and you can easily choose your own route. Most of the trails are flat with very little elevation gain, but there there are plenty of steep climbs and descents located off the trails for experienced hikers. The ridge separating Deer Creek Reservoir from the Soldier Hollow Ski Area is a wonderful place to rest while enjoying fall views of the Heber Valley.
